THIRD SUNDAY JAZZ SERIES

THIRD SUNDAY JAZZ SERIES

Polyrhythms Third Sunday Jazz Matinee and Workshops Series, is presented in the Redstone Room at the River Music Experience, the third Sunday of each month. Dedicated to providing high level affordable entertainment, these workshops and performances are designed to help demystify jazz music, as well as nurture, educate and inspire musicians and music appreciators alike. The program features an all-ages workshop at 3 pm, which is hands-on and entertaining as well as educational is highlighted by examples, instruction and commentary on jazz and music from seasoned and well respected players who also excel at educating. It should be noted: Polyrhythyms considers the workshop portion of our program to be the most essential component. A matinee performance by these musicians, of the highest artistic quality, follows from 6-8 pm. The Third Sunday Jazz Matinee and Workshop features top of the line “straight ahead” jazz players. The concept continues to grow around the notion that in order to fully appreciate jazz music and its nuances, we must understand the rules that govern jazz and how it is presented. Each month features additional insights as listeners learn or reconnect with the language of jazz music. The musicians demonstrate how this music is constructed from a playing as well as a listening standpoint.” Admission to the workshop sessions is kids are free & $5 for adults. General admission for the 6-8 PM performance is $10 or $15 for reserved seating, and tickets are available at the RME admissions desk, or online at www.rivermusicexperience.org. For more information call the RME: 563 326-1333. POLYRHYTHMS CULTURAL ARTS ECONOMIC STIMULUS PLAN The depressed state of the economy for the Quad Cities and the Country provoke Polyrhythms Third Sunday Jazz Matinee & Workshop Series to do its part to help uplift the spirits of our community and maintain a sense of normalcy by instituting the Polyrhythms Cultural Arts Economic Stimulus Package. Until the economy shows significant signs of recovery, Polyrhythms Third Sunday Jazz events, at the RME’s Redstone Room, rolls back its concert admission to the 2006 ticket prices. Admission to Third Sunday Jazz events shall be as follows: Third Sunday Jazz Matinee & Workshop Series - Admissions 3 p.m. Workshop Kids……………….. Free Adults …………….. $5 6 p.m. Concert General Admission... $10 Reserved Seating….. $15 Again, these prices will remain in place until the economy shows significant signs of recovery. Driven by our promise to provide high level affordable entertainment, “we cannot passively wait for better times, we must strive to be part of the solution” said Nate Lawrence, Director. “That the economy has adversely affected us all does not mean that we cannot spread the joy and tranquility that the arts provide for our lives.” President Obama, in his address to the joint session of Congress, reminded us “that dropping out of high school is not an option.” He emphasized our obligation to take responsibility for our families, and to educate our children. Polyrhythms Third Sunday Jazz Matinee & Workshop Series take the President’s words to mean that to let the arts go wanting in our community is not an option, and we will not relent in our obligation to educate our children.

JAZZ & BLUES RESTORATION PROJECT

JAZZ & BLUES RESTORATION PROJECT

PROJECT OVERVIEW The premise of Polyrhythms’ spring, 2010, “Jazz & Blues Restoration Project” (JBRP), is to explore the nature of the relationship between jazz and blues, and how that synergy informs our nation’s cultural roots. Polyrhythms is taking the time and making the effort to create the opportunity to explore and demonstrate the true nature and the history of this relationship. In exploring such issues, the Jazz and Blues Restoration Project 2010 will combine public performance, spoken word, poetry, scholastic curriculum and student interaction. Live jazz and blues performance as well as a shared oral history from renowned artists will provide a rich and valuable accounting of the relationships between jazz, blues and American culture. JBRP ’10 proposes to assemble a jazz band and a blues band featuring musicians selected for their unique ability to provide historically legitimate first person accounts of the development of the music. Narration, spoken word and poetry by nationally known historians, authors and celebrities will provide historical context and additional insights. After individual performances by both bands, they will merge and jointly perform to clearly demonstrate that musically they indeed share the same parents and fluently speak the family’s language. In addition to the performances, workshops and forums will be presented to further explore the nuances of style between and within each genre. Polyrhythms intend to document (audio & video) these historic collaborations and teaching opportunities and make these presentations available for educational purposes, as well as potential distribution via theatrical, Internet, DVD, PBS, or cable outlets. JBRP ’10 is an eighteen day spring tour to assist in restoring the heritage of Jazz and Blues by visiting five targeted cities: South Bend, IN, the Quad Cities, Des Moines, IA, Kansas City, MO, and Ft. Collins, CO. Larger urban centers have been intentionally avoided because our purpose is to bring a world-class experience into, often culturally underserved, mid to small market communities. Polyrhythms is seeking funding from national, state and local granting authorities as well as private sector contributors.
